Note: rank is players over the last seven days. A big server showing offline while the rest are up is that server restarting or wiping, not Rust being down.

How we reach the verdict

This answer comes from our own reading of the public server list, not from Facepunch announcements. Every five minutes we count how many servers answered and how many players they reported, then compare that against the same hour on the previous days.

That comparison matters because Rust traffic follows a daily rhythm. The population at 04:00 UTC is normally a fraction of what it is at 20:00 UTC, so a raw count means little on its own. We show the share of the normal figure for this hour instead.

At 11,799 servers and 89,091 players, the page reads Rust servers are up. The threshold is deliberately blunt. At 85% of the usual count or more we call servers up. Below half, we call it an outage. Between the two is a grey zone, and we say so rather than round it.

What the 48-hour charts show

Each line is one five-minute sample, so gaps are visible. A sharp dip that recovers within an hour usually means a Steam or network wobble, not Rust itself failing. A flat step down that stays down is the pattern to watch.

Force wipe days look different on the chart. Servers restart in sequence after the update, so the count dips unevenly and climbs back as each one returns. You can see the next wipe date on our force wipe calendar.

The biggest servers are listed separately because they carry a large share of the population. If the top few are down and the long tail is fine, the fault is likely with those hosts, not the game.

When this page says up but your browser is empty

The server list your game shows comes from Steam. If Steam is struggling, the browser empties before our counts fall, because a server still running can answer us while Steam fails to serve it to you.

Restart Steam first, then clear any region or tag filters in the browser. On a wipe day, update Rust before you search: an old build sees fewer servers. A VPN or strict firewall can also block the traffic the browser uses.

If only one server is missing, it is that server restarting or wiping. Its page shows when it was last seen, and you can find it again through the server browser.

What this verdict cannot tell you

A healthy count does not mean your chosen server is online. One server can be down while thousands of others are up, and our totals will barely move.

It also cannot tell you why a drop happened. We record what the list reported and when. We do not have access to host logs or to Facepunch's own status.

If the figures look wrong, check the timestamp under the verdict. A reading older than 25 minutes is marked as behind rather than presented as current. The full method is on our about page.

Questions

What readers ask

Are Rust servers down right now?

The verdict at the top of this page is live. It compares the current count of 11,799 servers with the usual count for this hour of the day, using a sample taken every five minutes. At 85% or more of normal we call servers up; below half, an outage.

Why does Rust show no servers when the status says up?

The in-game list comes from Steam, so a Steam problem can empty your browser while servers keep running, and our counts can stay normal. Restart Steam, clear your region and tag filters, and update the game on wipe day. A VPN or firewall can block the browser's traffic.

How often does this page update?

We read the server list every five minutes, so the figures here are usually under six minutes old. The time under the verdict shows the last successful read. Past 25 minutes the page marks itself as behind rather than showing stale data as current.
