About Rust Insights

Rust Insights reads Steam's public Rust server list every five minutes and turns it into figures you can check against.

This site exists because a server list shows you numbers but rarely explains them. Rust Insights collects the public data on every Rust server it can see, then explains what those figures mean, where they came from and what they leave out.

The main source is Steam's public Rust server list: names, live player counts, queues and the tags each server publishes. Some servers also answer direct queries, which give map seed, FPS and entity count. Not every server responds, so on those pages you see only what Steam publishes. Counts are refreshed every five minutes, so a figure you read now can be a few minutes old.

Ranks are worked out from players over the past week, hour by hour. A server that stays busy across the week ranks above one that fills for a single evening after a wipe. The server browser is ordered by player count, never by payment.

Wipe cycles matter as much as population. A server shows a high count on wipe day and a low one three days later, and the history charts let you see that pattern before you commit. Here the wipe timeline and the live player count page give you the context.

Everything shown comes from what servers publish about themselves. If your server's details look wrong, the cause is usually in its own settings; changes reach us within about five minutes. If something still looks wrong, write to hello@rustinsights.world.

Rust Insights is independent and run by Rust players. It is not affiliated with Facepunch Studios and nothing here is endorsed by them. Server names, descriptions and images belong to the people who run those servers.

Questions

What readers ask

Who runs Rust Insights?

Rust Insights is an independent site built by Rust players. It is not linked to Facepunch Studios, and no part of it is endorsed by them. Server names, descriptions and images remain the property of the people running those servers.

Where does the server data come from?

The figures come from Steam's public Rust server list and from direct queries to servers that answer them. Some servers do not respond to direct queries, so their pages show only what Steam publishes. Everything is refreshed every five minutes.

How are server rankings decided?

Rankings use player numbers across the past week, measured hour by hour. A server that is consistently busy ranks above one that fills only after a wipe. Ordering is by player count, and servers cannot pay for a higher place.
